The Buran Ghati trek in Himachal Pradesh is widely considered the most complete and thrilling trek in India. It packs every dramatic Himalayan feature into one trail: deep old-growth forests, an ocean of vivid meadows, a pristine alpine lake, snow patches, and a heart-pounding 400-meter snow wall rappel down a sharp pass.
Starting from the culturally rich, isolated village of Janglik, the trail rapidly morphs the landscape every day. The dramatic crossing of the Buran Ghati pass at 15,000 ft is a spectacular mountaineering experience requiring ropes and ice axes, offering unmatched thrill followed by a fun slide down the snow slope.
7-Day Itinerary
Shimla to Janglik
Meet in Shimla and embark on a mesmerizing 10-hour drive along the Pabbar river right up to the beautiful wooden-house village of Janglik (9,200 ft).
Janglik to Dayara
Exit the historic village and trek into a dark dense pine forest. Emerge a few hours later into the impossibly expansive green meadows of Dayara.
Dayara to Litham
Follow the Pabbar river up stream along cascading waterfalls. Walk across more sweeping meadows bordered by tall snow peaks to reach Litham.
Acclimatization & Chandranahan Lake Walk
An exploratory trek to the high-alpine glacial lake of Chandranahan fed by cascading streams. Crucial altitude gain for acclimatization. Return to Litham camp.
Litham to Dunda
A grueling but short climb leaving the green tree line completely behind. Trek up to the snowy advanced base camp, Dunda, nestled just below Buran pass.
Dunda to River Camp via Buran Ghati Pass
Start pre-dawn. Climb up steep snow slopes to 15,000 ft. Prepare for an unforgettable, sheer vertical 400m rappel down a snow wall followed by 5 rapid snow slides down to the valley floor.
River Camp to Barua, Drive to Shimla
A gorgeous descent passing through apple and apricot orchards bringing you down to Barua village. Board transport to reach Shimla by late evening.
