The Valley of Flowers in Uttarakhand is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most unique treks in the world. This enchanted valley, located at an altitude of 12,000 feet near Joshimath, is home to over 600 species of flowering plants, many of which are rare and endemic to this region.
The Valley of Flowers was discovered in 1931 by three British mountaineers – Frank Smythe, Eric Shipton, and R.L. Holdsworth – after they lost their way returning from a successful expedition to Mount Kamet. Frank Smythe was so captivated by the beauty that he returned in 1937 and wrote the book "The Valley of Flowers."
The valley bursts into a riot of colors from July to September with flowers like Brahmakamal, Blue Poppy, Cobra Lily, and hundreds of other species. The rare Blue Poppy (Meconopsis aculeata), which is the state flower of Uttarakhand, can only be found here and in a few other places in the world. You may also spot Himalayan Monal, Snow Leopard tracks, and Bharal (Blue Sheep).
The Valley is open only from June to October. The peak blooming season is late July to mid-August when the entire valley is carpeted with wildflowers in every color imaginable.
