Essential Packing List for Your First Himalayan Trek

Packing for a Himalayan trek can be overwhelming, especially if it is your first time. Pack too little and you risk being cold; pack too much and your backpack becomes a burden. Here is our definitive packing list, refined over 10 years of leading treks in the Himalayas.

Clothing (Layering System)

  • Base Layer: 2 moisture-wicking t-shirts, 2 thermal tops and bottoms (merino wool preferred)
  • Mid Layer: 1 fleece jacket or wool sweater
  • Outer Layer: 1 waterproof and windproof jacket with hood, 1 down jacket for evenings
  • Lower Body: 2 trekking pants (quick-dry), 1 waterproof pant
  • Accessories: Woolen cap, balaclava, sun hat, 2 pairs of woolen socks, liner gloves + outer gloves

Footwear

Invest in good quality waterproof trekking shoes with ankle support. Brands like Quechua, Wildcraft, and Woodland work well for Indian conditions. Break in your shoes at least 2 weeks before the trek. Carry one pair of light sandals or floaters for the campsite.

Gear & Equipment

  • Backpack: 50-60 liters with rain cover
  • Trekking poles (highly recommended, saves 30% knee stress)
  • Headlamp with extra batteries
  • Sunglasses (UV400 or Category 3/4)
  • Water bottle (1 liter) + Hydration bladder
  • Sunscreen SPF 50+ and lip balm with SPF
  • Personal first aid kit
  • Power bank (10,000 mAh minimum)

Documents

Always carry a photocopy of your Aadhaar card or any government ID, medical insurance papers, and emergency contact details. Share your trek itinerary with a family member who is not on the trek.

What NOT to Pack

Do not carry jeans (heavy when wet), cotton t-shirts (retain moisture), heavy books, laptops, or excessive electronics. Every gram counts when you are walking 6-8 hours a day at altitude!

Thank you for this guide! I'm planning to do Kedarkantha this December and this gives me exactly the information I needed about what to pack.

Is Dayara Bugyal safe for a 12 year old child during the peak winter months of January?

Hi Jane, yes Dayara Bugyal is generally safe but it gets extremely cold. Proper layer management is absolutely crucial for children.
