Hampta Pass – The Perfect Crossover Trek from Kullu to Lahaul Valley

Hampta Pass trek is a spectacular crossover trek that takes you from the lush green Kullu Valley to the barren, moon-like landscapes of Lahaul & Spiti. At 14,010 feet, Hampta Pass offers one of the most dramatic landscape transformations you will ever witness on a trek.

Why Hampta Pass is Special

Unlike most treks where the scenery changes gradually, Hampta Pass delivers a jaw-dropping contrast. On Day 1, you walk through dense forests and green meadows with wildflowers. By Day 3, you cross the pass and suddenly find yourself in an arid, cold desert landscape that looks like another planet altogether.

Trek Itinerary (5 Days)

  • Day 1: Manali to Jobra to Chika (3-4 hours trek) – Walk through beautiful apple orchards and pine forests
  • Day 2: Chika to Balu Ka Ghera (5-6 hours trek) – Stunning meadows with Dhauladhar range in background
  • Day 3: Balu Ka Ghera to Siagoru via Hampta Pass (7-8 hours) – The grand crossover day!
  • Day 4: Siagoru to Chatru (3-4 hours) – Easy descent through Lahaul valley
  • Day 5: Chatru to Chandratal Lake and drive to Manali – Visit the famous Moon Lake

Chandratal Lake – The Crown Jewel

The highlight bonus of this trek is visiting Chandratal (Moon Lake) at 14,100 feet. This crescent-shaped lake changes colors throughout the day – from deep blue to emerald green to turquoise. It is one of the most photographed lakes in the Indian Himalayas.

Difficulty & Fitness

Hampta Pass is rated Moderate. The pass day involves crossing a glacier and navigating rocky terrain. Good cardiovascular fitness is essential. Start preparing at least 4-6 weeks before the trek with daily jogging, stair climbing, and squats.

Thank you for this guide! I'm planning to do Kedarkantha this December and this gives me exactly the information I needed about what to pack.

Hi Jane, yes Dayara Bugyal is generally safe but it gets extremely cold. Proper layer management is absolutely crucial for children.
